A Zero Liquid Discharge system is an advanced wastewater treatment process designed to eliminate the discharge of liquid effluent from industrial or municipal facilities. Instead of releasing treated wastewater into the environment, a ZLD system ensures that all water is either reused within the facility or converted into solid waste for disposal, leaving behind zero liquid waste.

As zero liquid discharge (ZLD) substantially reduces, if not entirely eliminates, the quantity of waste that needs to be managed and the amount of water used, it is frequently associated with the circular economy and cost reduction. However, it is possible to recover byproducts and raw materials for sale or reuse.

Once the wastewater has undergone primary and secondary treatment, the remaining liquid waste undergoes further purification through advanced treatment techniques. These may include processes such as reverse osmosis, evaporation, crystallization, and ion exchange to remove dissolved solids, salts, and other impurities from the water.

Any residual solids or concentrated brine produced during the Zero Liquid Discharge process are collected and treated separately to extract valuable resources or dispose of them in an environmentally responsible manner. Solid waste generated from Zero Liquid Discharge systems may include sludge, crystallized salts, or other byproducts that can be managed through landfilling, recycling, or beneficial reuse.
